New Year, New Music: Karabas Barabas

Per the advice of Lawrence Gowan of Styx, we need to be constantly stretching our boundaries and checking out new tunes, new bands, and new sounds. Music makes us feel alive, so we owe it to ourselves to appreciate the old stuff, and to embrace the new stuff as well.

In an effort to check out new music in 2017, I seized the opportunity to listen to Karabas Barabas, a Brooklyn based trio. The band’s new Return of the Sexy Demon album (available on iTunes here) has a definite rock sound with a kooky, fun, punk element, somewhat reminiscent of Primus. I listened to some of the songs quite a few times, and I will say this: good, fun stuff.

Karabas Barabas has released a video for Being a Man, one of the songs from the new album. In watching and listening to the video of Being a Man (see video below), I realize that we don’t hear many songs about what it’s like to “be a man.” And, this song gives us some insight into what might occur in a man’s day-to-day life, presented in an entertaining style. Guys need to wash dishes and clothes, and make dinner, too, while still allowing time for mischievousness, including playing the knife and hand game (or whatever that game is called). Hey, they’re doing the best that they can. Watch the video and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

All kidding aside, Karabas Barabas is definitely worth a listen, and I think they will be a blast to see in concert. I’m adding Being and Man and other tunes to my party playlist. So, be adventurous, step out of your comfort zone, and give Karabas Barabas a try!

Notice: These songs are not necessarily for those with virginal ears.

  1. Glad for Lawrence Gowan’s advice on embracing new music, which lead to this very interesting and humorous review. I found the music to be lively with a pounding beat.
